Heriot Watt is a specialist University in Edinburgh with a global presence. The university is known for creating world renowned, innovative research and highly employable graduates.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the organisations Legal Team for the role of General Counsel. The successful candidate will report directly to University Secretary, and the role will focus on enhancing the university’s performance and efficiency through contractual agreements.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Providing timely legal advice, collaborating with university executives to optimise contract value and ensure compliance.
• Attending and contribute to meetings of the Executive, Court, and Committees as needed.
• Assessing legal implications and risks of major projects, offering solutions to mitigate risks and protect the university’s interests.
• Cultivating relationships across the university, understanding its mission, strategy, and legal frameworks to engage effectively on various matters.
• Overseeing external legal services, optimizing internal resources and securing value for money while meeting the university’s legal needs.

Person Specification

The team is looking to hear from Scottish-qualified lawyers or dually qualified in Scotland and England/Wales, with 10+ years’ PQE. Interested applicants should be comfortable in driving complex global organisations and knowledge of the higher education sector is desirable.

This opportunity offers an exciting role for an experienced Lawyer to join a prestigious organisation and collaborate with subsidiary companies, including Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, Oriam (National Performance Centre for Sport), and Heriot-Watt Trading.

This post is based in Edinburgh and is an on-campus role, however, there is scope for hybrid working.
