World Mental Health Day 2023

Oct 2023

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

October 10th 2023 is World Mental Health Day and here at FWA, we are wearing yellow to show support to the #HelloYellow campaign which helps raise awareness to mental health in young people.

Mental health in children and young people is on the rise, especially after the negative effects of the COVID-19 outbreak which resulted in multiple nationwide lockdowns. Recent statistics have found that 1 in 6 children aged 5-16 are likely to have a mental health problem; this is 5 children in every classroom of 30.

So, what can we do to help young people around us?

  • Be vigilant – look out for signs of bad mental health such as anxiousness, withdrawnness, continuous low mood, sadness and drastic changes in weight.
  • Encourage them to share their feelings – take a soft approach and ask the young person about their day, how they felt and why they felt this way.
  • Know when and where to get help – If a young person isn’t able to engage in a discussion about their poor mental health, you should still consider what support can be put in place for them by contacting medical professionals.
